Preparing Your unit for the Sale:

When advertising a unit for sale online it is important to remember that pictures sell!  Your pictures are a virtual walk-around for potential buyers from all over North America.

Photo Tips

  • Wash your unit before taking photos.

    • Clean units show the buyer that you care about the condition and add value to your unit.

  • Make minor repairs to cosmetic damages; what may look like a small blemish to you can result in a large reduction in value.

  • Take pictures:  Take multiple photos of your vehicle.  We suggest doing a walk around photo shoot of your vehicle, interior and exterior photos should be included.

    • Take photos of any damages, and photograph during the day for best results.

    • Try to take photos with a simple background.

    • Keep in mind that potential buyers may request additional photos.

Gather the needed information and documents

  • Get your paperwork in order.

    • Your title: All parties listed as owners on the title must sign it at the time the sale is completed.  Make sure you check with the DMV in your state to see if the title also needs to be notarized.  Here is a direct link to the DMV offices in every state: https://www.dmvusa.com/

  • Have a Bill of Sale ready.

    • You will provide a signed copy to your buyer at time payment is made.

    • Keep a copy for your records as well.  This protects all parties.

    • We have included a Bill of Sale on the last page of this Seller’s Guide.  You can print out and fill in the needed information.  Make sure you buyer gets the original and you keep a copy.

  • If you have a lien, obtain a current payoff from your lienholder.  You will need to provide that information to your buyer.

    • The buyer will be sending payment directly to your lien holder so you will have to provide them with your lien holders information once you have agreed on the purchase price.

    • Once the title is released, you will need to sign it, and send it via overnight mail to the buyer.

Safety Concerns

  • Meet your potential buyer in a public place.

  • Never let someone test drive without you or without holding his or her driver’s license and insurance card (or a copy) for collateral.

  • Never meet a potential buyer alone.  Bring a friend or family member for security.

  • Remember, we are here to help guide you through all these processes, so please contact us if you have any questions!

Closing the sale and getting paid

Once you and your buyer have agreed to a selling price and terms of the sale, it is time to close the transaction.

Below are the best options to safely get paid.

Bank to Bank Wire Transfer

  • Contact your bank and inform them you are selling a vehicle and the buyer will be paying by a wire transfer.  They will be able to verify when the funds transfer has been initiated.

    • Your buyer will feel more protected as they will have proof of payment.

    • Once the funds have been transferred, you will sign the title and both parties sign the Bill of Sale.  The buyer can now take the unit.

Escrow Service

An Escrow service can hold the funds to protect you and your buyer, and should only be used if there is not a lien.    Escrow services provide many benefits to BOTH buyer and seller to ensure that the transaction is completed to everyone’s satisfaction.  There is a small fee to use these services, and the buyer and seller split the fees.

Cash

  • We suggest meeting the buyer at your bank as they can quickly count it, verify it and deposit it into your personal account.

  • Best suited for local purchases.

Checks/cashier checks

  • Sellers are encouraged to accept this form of payment only if there are no other options.

  • Many scams and payment fraud exist with this form of payment.

    • If it is the only way, then require the buyer to meet you at the bank that the check is written on or have your bank contact that bank to confirm that funds are good.

    • Local purchases ONLY.  Scams often include fake cashier’s checks or a check with non-sufficient funds in the account.  The Seller is often unaware of the scam for 7-10 business days AFTER the check has been cashed.

Buyer Services

If your buyer needs assistance with getting a unit inspection or transportation, here are a few businesses we recommend.   Feel free to provide this information to your buyer.

Transportation Services

UShip.com

  • Your buyer can easily set up an account at uship.com and all they will need to do is input the unit information, and the location of pick up and drop off. Trucks in the area will then place bids and the dates they would be available.  This is a great tool as it offers multiple options for your buyer.

Inspection Services

lemonsquad.com

  • Many buyers will request a unit inspection, especially, if they are having the unit delivered to them.  These are a pretty standard part of selling a unit online.

  • Don’t worry, we never give your address out to anyone and the inspector will contact you directly to schedule a convenient time to inspect the unit.

Finalizing the sale

Congratulations on selling your unit online!  We hope you are happy with the services we have provided to you and look forward to assisting you again in the future.

  • Please remember to notify us when your sale is completed so that we discontinue our marketing efforts for you.

  • A sample Bill of Sale is attached at the end of this document for your use, if desired.

    • Print a copy for your buyer and a copy for yourself to retain for your records.
